Program in Life Sciences
for qualified, diverse students

Northwestern University and Chicago State University announce a new master's degree program designed to provide students with the academic skills, laboratory training, and familiarity with the PhD program environment, that will allow the students to complete the doctoral program at Northwestern University (NU) or a similar institution. This program, supported by the National Institutes of Health, is designed for unusually able students (African American, Hispanic, native American, or Pacific Islander) whose undergraduate preparation would not make them competitive for acceptance in a high quality doctoral program for whatever legitimate reasons (e.g., lack of relevant courses or an inadequate GPA due to need to work to support oneself), but who aspire to earn a Ph.D. degree and who have the necessary dedication to complete the program.

Main features of the program include:

  • M.S. in Biological Sciences in the Microbial / Cellular / Molecular track at Chicago State (CSU) including 25 hours of graduate-level coursework
  • Research in the laboratory of a CSU faculty member to fulfill the requirement of completing an M.S. thesis
  • One quarter in residence at Northwestern with 6-9 hours of course work and a laboratory rotation
  • Customized summer courses, including GRE Preparation and Skills Development and Strategies
    for Success in Graduate Programs
  • Financial support (paid as research assistant for 20 hr/wk during academic year and 40 hr/wk
    during summer)
  • Waiver of all tuition payments at CSU and NU
  • Support for travel to at least one scientific meeting per year
  • Academic support in the form of faculty advisors and tutors
Applicants who may have difficulty submitting all of their application materials by June 1 should contact Professor Dubocovich or Professor Erhart for an extension of the deadline.  It should also be noted that--for Bridge Program applicants--there is no deadline for applying to the graduate school at CSU;  applications will be accepted during the summer.
