Group meetings play an important role in the growth of scientists at all levels in the Center for Cell and Developmental Biology. These meetings give all members of the labs an opportunity to both celebrate their discoveries and share their research conundrums. As the labs discuss their experiments with a more diverse group of scientists, they are able to uncover new ideas and techniques. See below for descriptions of some group meetings attended by Center faculty, postdocs, and students.
We would like to thank the Lurie Cancer Center for sponsoring these events. Please click on their logo to visit their website!
Cell Biology Group Meetings ("Supergroup")

These are bi-monthly meetings that include the Brickner, Fölsch, Gaber, Hicke, Matouschek, and Weiss labs, which all share a focus on cell regulation and membrane trafficking. Here graduate students and postdoctoral fellows present their latest research findings in the context of the broader area of cell biology.

Oncogenesis & Developmental Biology Group Meetings

Members of this group (Allada, Beitel, Carhew, Dudley, Holmgren, LaBonne, and Wang labs) meet weekly on the Evanston campus to explore the links between developmental regulatory pathways and their deregulation during tumorigenesis. Ongoing research in participating laboratories is discussed, as are recent advances from the literature. This forum fosters a lively exchange of ideas on a variety of topics including maintenance and loss of cell polarity, Epithelial-Mesenchymal transitions, and signal transduction pathways and regulatory mechanisms that play central roles in both embryogenesis and cancer. Approximately 30-40 researchers participate in this group which also serves as an important training forum and resource for graduate and post doctoral appointees to the Oncogenesis and Developmental Biology training program.

Worm Meetings

Friday 9:15 AM in Cook 3118A (meetings go until ~ 10:30 AM)Worm meeting currently include members of the Morimoto lab who are working with C. elegans. The meeting involve a rotating schedule where one person presents his or her work each week to accomplish one of the following goals:

  • allowing an advanced lab member to present a detailed description/analysis of their project that could not be given in the general (main) lab meetings as people would need an in-depth understanding of C. elegans to understand
  • a place for the group study of "C. elegans," a crucial text in the study of worms: the worm group divdes chapters of the "C. elegans" vol. I and II and people present specific chapters to the group
  • a forum for the presentation of papers relevant to worm reserach, proposed experiments and to discuss useful new systems

Contact Georgette Pliml for questions regarding the Worm Meetings.

Molecular Biology Club

The Molecular Biology Club, which enjoys the sponsorship of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, holds its monthly gatherings on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:00 PM in room 3118, Cook Hall. The interests of this group cover a wide range of molecular and cell biology. At each meeting, two speakers (typically graduate students or postdocs) present their current work in an atmosphere that encourages lively discussion.
